Driving Schools

Driving Schools will have a number of individual Driving Instructors and will have several advantages over sole trader Driving Instructors both in the variety and service they offer. A Driving School is a business that will offer Driving Lessons to those that are learning to drive, take refresher lessons or foreign residents looking for familiarisation lessons.

National Driving Schools often rely on brand name and extensive advertising to sell their Driving Lessons as they lack any local presence. Local Driving Schools rely very much on the local aspect and will quite often have a good supply of customer reviews from local students to compete with the nationals.

Driving Schools Offer More Choice

Driving Schools will often have dedicated customer services that are able to answer the phone during working hours with staff that are trained to listen to your requirements, answer your questions and provide a solution. They will usually provide card payment facilities over the phone, BACS transfer and website e commerce for ease of payment. A choice of male & female Driving Instructors is normally available that will meet with your requirements. The other major benefit of a Driving School is that the individual Instructors working within the school will adhere to an operational policy and mission statement that will ensure standards are regulated.

The size of the School will generally reflect the variety of services offered. It may offer both male and female Driving Instructors with learner lessons in preparation for passing the driving test. They will often have a variety of driving instructors to match your requirements and availability. It may also offer refresher driving lessons for full licence holders that have not driven for a while or are returning to driving after a loss of confidence or ill health. Many Schools will offer foreign residents familiarisation lessons to become accustomed to the UK roads and different rules and regulations in addition to preparation for the UK driving test.

Important Note:

Some driving schools have internal training programs where they train the general public to become fully qualified instructors (ADI’s) During the final stages of that training, a real pupil is required to gain experience before the qualifying exam.

Unfortunately, they do not always make it clear that you are being allocated a trainee and often charge the same amount for the lessons.

Some schools offer a unique package where the pupil gets their lessons for free and also benefits from having not only the trainee instructor but the head trainer supervising the lesson as well. Make sure you are fully aware of the circumstances and who you are being allocated to conduct your lessons.

Independent Instructors:

There are currently around 40,000 driving instructors on the UK register and many work on an independent basis (sole traders)

The advantage of choosing a sole trader is that you will only deal with one person. The disadvantages are that they can be quite difficult to contact as they unable to take calls when teaching, they have very limited availability, nowhere near the choice of options as a school and many still have no payment options other than cash on the day. They are not subject to a standard working procedure and many do not have access to ongoing training to keep up with changes within the industry.
